Common Power Ratings

There are electrical outlet types that come in different power ratings that depend on the application. These rating include:

15A, 120 Volt Outlets

These are the simplest and most affordable outlets and are best for low-power appliances and devices. Commonly found in older homes.

20A, 125 Volt Outlets

These outlets handle a larger power draw in order to support larger appliances, like dishwashers, washing machines, and space heaters.

20A, 250 Volt Outlets

These outlets support the highest power appliances, like air conditioners, air compressors, and heavy-duty equipment. They do require a dedicated circuit with a double-pole circuit breaker in the main panel, otherwise the power will constantly break and lead to issues.

How To Repair An Electrical Outlet

Now, we are going to lay out how to effectively repair an electrical outlet. However, we URGE you to reach out to us if you are having difficulties with your outlet. This should really be left to the professionals. But sometimes the issue might be minor enough for you to handle yourself. Over the years, outlets eventually break. Some common signs include burn marks on the plastic, cords not being able to fit directly in, and a lack of electricity. It is always best to replace an outlet if any of these signs exist. Here are a few simple steps you can follow.

Electrical Outlet RepairStep 1: The first step is to simply turn off the power before working on an electrical outlet. Unscrew the plastic faceplate from the wall and remove it. Then unscrew the actual outlet box from the wall.

Step 2: Next you will unscrew the wires connecting to the outlet. Look at the wires to make sure there is no damage. Be sure the damage lies within the broken outlet. Then cut the exposed wire off because you should connect any new outlet with a new piece of wire. Next, strip about an inch of the wire insulation off, which exposes a new piece of wire.

Step 3: Place the new wires into the holes where the old wires once were. Then tighten the screws, which securely tightens the wires. You can wrap the outlet in electrical tape for a little added security.

Step 4: Screw the outlet itself back into the wall and then screw the face-place back afterwards.

Step 5: Turn the power back on for that outlet and test it. This can be done with a voltage tester, which should read around 120 volts to be safe.

So you only need a few steps to repair an electrical outlet. And with some simple troubleshooting you can get it fixed. However, the professionals at ABCO Electric are here to help! We have years of experience helping people with electrical issues across Long Island, New York.
